Paul Simonis
Paul Simonis (born April 20, 1912 in Merzig ; † December 6, 1996 ) was a German politician ( FDP / DPS ).
Life
After attending grammar school in Merzig , Simonis completed an apprenticeship in the social department of the Villeroy & Boch works in Mettlach . He then worked there as an administrative clerk. He joined the NSDAP on June 1, 1933 ( membership number 2,696,473). From 1937 he was the managing director of the Saarland Health Insurance Association and after its dissolution became the regional managing director of the former Reich Association of Company Health Insurance Funds in Essen . Since 1939 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier . During the war he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released in November 1948. After his release from captivity, he returned to the Saar area.
Simonis joined the Democratic Party of Saar (DPS) in 1950 and was elected vice chairman of the party in June of the same year. Since the connection of the DPS to the FDP on August 11, 1957, he was also a member of the Liberals. In May 1962 he was elected as the successor to Heinrich Schneider as regional chairman of the FDP / DPS and in this function was also a member of the FDP federal executive committee .
From 1955 to 1970 he was a member of the Saarland state parliament and chairman of the DPS parliamentary group there in 1956/57. From 1957 to 1960 he was Vice-President of the State Parliament.
After the formation of a coalition of CDU and FDP / DPS, Simonis was appointed Minister for Labor and Social Affairs on January 17, 1961 in the Saarland government led by Prime Minister Franz-Josef Röder . On July 3, 1968, he was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister. After the FDP's defeat in the state elections in June 1970, he resigned from the government on July 13, 1970 and was replaced in his ministerial office by Rainer Wicklmayr .
