Canals in Hamburg
The canals in Hamburg formed an important transport network for local public transport ( Alster shipping ) and freight traffic until the 1960s . Today only a few companies are of barges supplies. The "Alster fleet" is now used for tourism and is no longer part of the HVV tariff association .
One of the main tasks of the Alster canals was to create an overflow for the Hamburg mixed water sewer system. The earth masses accumulated during construction were needed for the construction of railway systems.
