The Inselkanal is a side channel of the Alster in Hamburg - Alsterdorf . It is 620 meters long and 15 meters wide throughout.

The channel branches off shortly behind at the mouth of Skagerrak channel in the Alster right from ( location ), and extends parallel to the Alster in southsouthwest direction. After 90 meters it crosses under the Reichstag Bridge with Wilhelm-Metzger-Straße. After 500 meters it turns east, is crossed by the Inselbrücke with the Inselstraße and flows back into the Alster ( Lage ), shortly before it is crossed by the Deelbögebrücke ( Ring 2 ). The artificial island between the Alster and the Inselkanal is 480 meters long and up to 130 meters wide and is accessed via the Inselstraße. A footpath runs along the western bank of the island channel.

The former course of the Alster was straightened from 1913 to around 1918 from Ohlsdorf to Winterhude . In addition to the ring canal as the remainder of the Alster old course , the three Braband Canal , Skagerrak Canal and Island Canal running parallel to the Alster were also created in order to enable more construction on the water.

The name of the canal means that it creates an island together with the Alster. It is a first-order body of water.
