The Uhlenhorster Canal is a canal in the Hamburg district of Uhlenhorst .

history

Today's Uhlenhorst was first mentioned in a document in 1256. At that time the area was called "Papenhude". It was mostly swampy pastureland, which was initially unsuitable for building and gave rise to disputes over pasture rights over the centuries.

In 1865, the then owner of Uhlenhorst, the entrepreneur and speculator August Abendroth , completed the canalisation of the area. As a result, the Uhlenhorst was developed as building land, as the channels drained moisture into the Alster, while the ground level was increased by the excavation. Many of the canals created in this way were later filled in again, but the Uhlenhorster Canal , the Hofweg Canal and their branch canals remained. The parallel street to the south of the Uhlenhorster Canal was named "Canalstrasse".

course

The Uhlenhorster Canal extends over 653 m from the Feenteich ( Lage ) west of the Alster to Winterhuder Weg ( Lage ), a section of the federal highway 5 that marks the border between the districts of Uhlenhorst and Barmbek-Süd . The Herbert-Weichmann-Bridge , the Arndtstrasse Bridge and the Hofweg Bridge lead over the Uhlenhorster Canal. It is also connected to the Long Train between the Alster and the Osterbek Canal via the Hofweg Canal.

At the Feenteich, which was formerly known as the "Bassin", the Uhlenhorster Canal is lined with green areas and has a low embankment. This is characterized by the gardens of the residents, some with trees, and stretches for more than two hundred meters in a westerly direction almost to the confluence of the Hofweg Canal at the Hofweg Bridge. Behind the bridge, the canal up to Winterhuder Weg is fenced in on both sides by high masonry or bank reinforcements made of concrete and metal. While the canal runs mainly along private properties and residential buildings up to this point, there are mostly office and commercial buildings on the banks between Hofwegbrücke and Winterhuder Weg. Arndt between the road and the Stormsweg a smaller extends puncture channel in northern direction. In 1885 there was another short branch canal parallel to this, and the basin on Winterhuder Weg was also much larger.
