Ernst Kunkel (politician, 1908)

Ernst Kunkel (born May 17, 1908 in Dudweiler ; † April 29, 1984 ibid) was a Saarland politician ( SPD / SPS ).

Kunkel worked as a city civil servant. In his youth he was involved in the Socialist Workers' Youth and was a member of their Saarland regional executive from 1922 to 1925. From 1925 to 1935 he was a member of the board of the SPD local association in Dudweiler. After the Saar referendum in 1935 , he emigrated to France. In Strasbourg he was arrested in 1940 after the Wehrmacht marched in and sentenced to prison.

After the war he returned to Saarland and was appointed mayor of Völklingen from June 1945 to September 1946 . As a member of the Social Democratic Party of Saarland (SPS), he was a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1947, which drafted the constitution . Kunkel was a member of the Saarland Landtag from 1947 to 1955; from January 1955 he also chaired his parliamentary group in the state parliament. From 1968 to 1973 he was a member of the Dudweiler city council for the SPD.
