The Primstalsperre (also: Talsperre Nonnweiler ) near Nonnweiler ( St. Wendel district ), Saarland , and Züsch / Neuhütten ( Trier-Saarburg district ), Rhineland-Palatinate , was created by the damming of Prims and Allbach to the Nonnweiler reservoir. Some of the water is diverted to the Blies instead of the Prims in order to keep the Bexbach power plant operating even in dry periods.
It is discharged into the Blies after it has passed through a hydropower station near Gronig . It was built in two phases from 1973 to 1975 and from 1977 to 1982 by the Nonnweiler Dam Association. The Prims is a tributary of the Saar . The water volume of the reservoir is about 20 million m³ , the surface about 1 km² . This makes it the largest water reservoir in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate .
The circular route around the dam is 12 km long. In 1996 a working group from the Birkenfeld high school (Nahe) laid out a planetary hiking trail on this circular route . Our solar system is depicted there on a scale of 1: 1 billion. At about four times the speed of light one can hike from the model of the sun to the planets Mercury , Venus , Earth , Mars etc. to the dwarf planet Pluto , which is located at a distance of 5.9 km from the starting point at the dam .
There are pre-barriers with concrete gravity dams at both inlets . Swimming and other water sports are prohibited due to their intended use as a drinking water reservoir.
The Primstalsperre lies in the area of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park . The ring wall of Otzenhausen is very close by . The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park has bordered the dam in the east since 2014 .
