Reconstruction of the Altburg castle

The Altburg is a Celtic castle complex near Bundenbach in the Hunsrück . It is located on a plateau about one hectare high above the Hahnenbachtal . The small castle was built by residents of the Celtic Treveri people in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. Used. The ruins of the Schmidtburg are located on the opposite hill . In the immediate vicinity is the abandoned Herrenberg slate mine , which is now used as a show mine .

open air museum

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier carried out the excavations from 1971 to 1974. The Altburg was built in the 1st century BC. It was partially rebuilt and expanded into an early historical open-air museum. One could reconstruct the dimensions of the settlement and the interior development so well because the trenches and the holes of the more than 3000 posts in the soft slate rock remained visible even after 2000 years. In 1988 the open-air museum was inaugurated and opened for viewing.

Folk and Celtic Festival

Once a year on the 3rd weekend in August, the Altburg Festival takes place, the largest Irish folk festival in Rhineland-Palatinate with international folk bands and a Celtic market. Sundays are always family days with a large children's program.
