Dušan Galis (born November 24, 1949 in Ružomberok ) is a Slovak soccer coach and politician as well as a former Czechoslovak national soccer player. In 2006 he was elected to the Slovak parliament for the SMER party .

Athletic career

Dušan Galis, baptized Peter Galis, played for Dynamo Dolný Kubín in his youth. At the age of 20, the striker moved to Strojárne Martin in the 3rd division, the team rose in 1971 to the 2nd Czechoslovakian division. In 1972 Galis moved to VSS Košice in the first division and was top scorer in the 1975/76 season with 21 goals .

This season he was appointed to the Czechoslovak national football team for the first time . In his third of eight international matches, he scored his only goal. It was a 2-1 win against England, which made it possible for Czechoslovakia to participate in the 1976 European Championship , which they won with Galis in the squad.

In 1977 Galis moved to Slovan Bratislava , where he stayed until 1981. He then moved to FC Cádiz , but returned to Czechoslovakia after a year and joined ZVL Žilina . In 1982/83 he played for the Belgian club KSC Hasselt , 1983/84 for ZŤS Petržalka . Then he ended his career.

Galis' coaching career began in 1990 when Slovan Bratislava was looking for a successor to Jozef Jankech . Two newcomers, Ján Medviď and Dušan Galis, were shortlisted. The nine-member council voted 5: 4 in favor of Galis. The trust in the young coach paid off, in 1992 Slovan broke the dominance of Sparta Prague and won the Czechoslovak Championship. Galis was also successful in the Slovak league: Slovan won the title in 1994, 1995 and 1996. The team also won the Slovak Cup in 1994 and 1997 .

1997 Galis moved to Spartak Trnava and won the Slovak Cup there in his first season. In early 1999 he became the coach of the Slovak national team , but announced his resignation in the event that František Laurinec should become association president. After Laurinec was elected president of the SFZ, Galis resigned from his position without having played a single game with the team. Dušan Galis then moved to Omonia Nicosia , but returned to Slovakia in 2000 and took over Artmedia Bratislava .

In November 2003 he was again appointed coach of the Slovak national football team, and agreed, although Laurinec was still the association's president. He led the team up to relegation to the 2006 World Cup , in which they failed because of Spain .

The qualification for the European Championship 2008 began with little success. Even after the 3-0 home defeat against the Czech Republic in September , the Slovak media and many fans demanded a change of coach. The players had supported Galis until the end. After the 1: 4 debacle in the European Championship qualifier against Germany in Bratislava , Galis resigned as coach of the Slovak national soccer team. He said he wanted to devote more time to his political career in the future.

Political career

In 2005, Galis was elected as a member of the municipal parliament of the greater Bratislava district, he had stood as a candidate in District 3 for a coalition of HZD, SF and SMER. In June 2006 he was elected to the Parliament of the Slovak Republic for SMER. Opponents point out that in the files of the former Czechoslovak State Security under the registration number 29068 there is an entry of an unofficial employee with the name Dušan Galis and the date of birth November 24, 1949 , who was listed as an unofficial employee under the code name Rene .
