Georg Henisch

Georg Henisch (born April 24, 1549 in Bartfeld ; † May 31, 1618 in Augsburg ) was a humanist , educator , physician and lexicographer .

Life

Georg Henisch came from a family that had probably immigrated to the Kingdom of Hungary from Saxony . His father Johannes Henisch had become a syndic in his native town. After attending grammar school in Linz , he moved to the University of Wittenberg in 1566 , moved to the University of Leipzig in 1570 , also moved to the University of Paris and completed his studies at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1576 .

On the recommendation of Hieronymus Wolf , he moved to the Augsburg High School in Augsburg in 1576, where he worked as a high school professor for logic and mathematics until 1617. In addition, he also gave classes in Hebrew , Greek , Latin and rhetoric . With Simon Fabricus (1533–1593) he held the office of rector of the institution from 1580–1593. He was also responsible for the city library, whose first catalog of prints he published (oldest print catalog) and he ran a very popular practice until his death.

As the four-time dean of the Augsburg Medical College, he has kept its files since it was founded in 1582, thus creating the basis for the Augsburg medical historiography. Henisch moved in the humanist circle of Markus Welser , with whom he also founded the publishing house "Ad insigne Pinus", which later developed as a defender of Christian humanism as a tool of the Counter Reformation. Essentially aimed at practical knowledge and results, Henisch met the wishes of the sober calculating and counting middle class.

As a doctor, he published a handbook and edited an Aretaeus edition. He also occupied himself with astronomy all his life and published an astronomical calendar every year. He is also the author of the first German dictionary , which is the first volume to deal with the letters A – G and in which he compares 10 languages. Henisch is considered to be one of the last representatives of humanism , which smoothed the transition to the age of the natural sciences.
