Pentapolitana (or Hungarian Pentapolis ) was a medieval alliance of the five most important royal free cities ( Latin : libera regiae civitas, Hungarian : szabad királyi város, Slovak : slobodné kráľovské mesto) in the Kingdom of Hungary :

Today these cities are in Eastern Slovakia .

The first meeting of the representatives of these cities took place in 1412. The alliance finally came into being between 1440 and 1445.

The main purpose of the alliance was to control and develop trade, as several ancient trade routes ran through the northeastern region of the Kingdom of Hungary - now eastern Slovakia. The leading city of the alliance was Košice.

In 1549, during the Reformation , a variant of the Lutheran creed emerged in the five cities, the Confessio Pentapolitana .
