The Model 1 was the first mass-produced motorcycle by the American manufacturer Harley-Davidson . The purchase price was 200 US dollars ; 38 pieces were made, 8 in 1905.

prehistory

William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson developed the first prototype of a motorcycle in 1903. The engine was designed according to the De Dion-Bouton system , had a displacement of 167 cm³ and made about 2 HP (1.5 kW). Since Harley and Davidson were not satisfied with the performance, the displacement was increased in 1904 to 405 cm³ with one of 76 mm bore and one of 89 mm stroke. Two copies of this pre-production model were made.

technology

Model 1 was first mass-produced in 1905 . Compared to the pre-production model, the engine experienced an increase in displacement to 440 cm³ (26.8 ci ). The stroke remained the same, the cylinder was bored out to 79.4 mm. With a compression ratio of 4: 1 and the 22 mm carburettor developed in-house, this motor with 6-volt battery ignition produced over 1 hp (735 W) more than the pre-production models. As was common back then, only the outlet valve was controlled, the inlet valve was designed as a sniffer valve . The 84 kg light motorcycle rolled on 28-inch tires, the wheelbase was 1295 mm. The unsprung frame of the prototype and the two pre-production models remained the same. The model was only delivered in black with red lettering and gold decorative lines, which Davidson's aunt Janet Davidson painted by hand. To start the motorcycle was started with the bicycle pedals, stopped by interrupting the ignition and coaster brake .
