Bolonia is a village on the Costa de la Luz in southern Andalusia . It belongs to the municipality of Tarifa in the province of Cádiz and is located on the Strait of Gibraltar across from the Moroccan city of Tangier . The bay of Bolonia with its approximately 3.8 km long and up to 70 m wide sandy beach is bounded in the west by Cape Camarinal and in the east by Punta Paloma. The Sierra de La Plata, the Sierra de la Higuera and the Loma San Bartolomé rise towards the sparsely populated interior.

Baelo Claudia

On the outskirts of Bolonia is Baelo Claudia , one of the best-preserved Roman settlements in Spain . Excavations have been taking place here since 1917. The excavation site can be visited and a visitor center provides information about the finds.

Sand dune of Bolonia

The dune of Bolonia (on the right in the picture)

At the western end of the sandy beach of Bolonia is the dune of Bolonia , which has been protected since 2001 for its ecological importance as a natural monument . The dune and the mountains surrounding it are part of the Parque Natural del Estrecho (Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park). The dune, more than 30 m high and 200 m wide, stands out from a wide dune system. The dune complex is one of the few in Andalusia that - fed by the Levante wind , which hits the end of the bay here head-on - is constantly advancing inland. Apart from common beach grass , no plants can settle under these conditions. The dune penetrates a pine forest . The continuous advancement of the sand inevitably leads to the death of the pine trees that are spilled.
