Avis is one of the world's largest rental car companies based in Parsippany , New Jersey , USA and is part of the Avis Budget Group .
history
Avis was founded in 1946 by Warren Edward Avis (1915-2007) in Detroit . From there, the company expanded across the United States . In 1956 the first international branches were opened in Europe, Canada and Mexico. Today there are more than 4000 of them. The European headquarters are in Bracknell , England , approx. 40 miles west of London, while the German headquarters are in Oberursel, near Frankfurt am Main, in Hesse .
Avis has been using the slogan We try harder created by the advertising agency DDB Worldwide since 1963 . This was the result of a direct comparison between Avis and its US competitor and former industry leader Hertz : "We are only number two, so we try harder." This campaign is repeatedly recognized by advertising professionals as an outstanding, historical marketing strategy.
Avis has had various owners throughout its history:

- 1965 - ITT Corporation
- 1972 - ITT floats Avis on the stock exchange
- 1977 - Norton Simon
- 1983 - Esmark (with the acquisition of Norton Simon)
- 1984 - Beatrice Foods (with the takeover of Esmark)
- 1986 - Wesray Capital ( KKR takes over Beatrice and sells Avis)
- 1987 - Majority shares are sold to the company's own employees
- 1989 - General Motors (buys a 29% minority stake)
- 1996 - Hospitality Franchise Systems (HFS) takes over Avis
- 1997 - HFS puts Avis back on the stock exchange
- 2001 - Cendant buys all Avis shares
- 2006 - Cendant is split into four companies, Avis joins the Avis Budget Group
- 2011 - Avis Budget Group takes over the previous licensee Avis Europe PLC. The European activities were legally separated in 1986.

Trivia
The number plates of Avis cars in Germany, which are approved for Avis Budget car rental in Oberursel, have the distinctive sign "EU" (District Euskirchen) and the first identification number begins with an "A", whereby the second identification number is consecutive (example as of April 2020: EU-AK 3758). Cars that licensees add to the Avis vehicle pool deviate from this rule. For example, the identification numbers of the cars from Wucherpfennig and Krohn GmbH begin with "K" or "W" (e.g. EU-KW 1234). In the case of vans and minibuses, the license plates also start from the identification number with "L" (e.g. EU-LK 4578). Another special feature is the prestige class Porsche with the registration LB-XX-XXXX (Ludwigsburg district).
