Balice [ baˈlʲiʦɛ ] is a village and Sołectwo (Schulzenamt) of Gmina Zabierzów in Powiat Krakowski in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship , Poland .
The village is known for the international airport John Paul II. Krakow-Balice located there , which is the civil and military airport of Krakow .
geography
It is located on the northern slope side of Brama Krakowska . The distance to the center of Krakow is about 15 km. Balice is partly located in the protected landscape area of Tenczyński Park Krajobrazowy , an extensive forest area. The protected Jura rock faces on the Rudawa River are worth seeing .
From the local mountain Góra Wał, which is around 300 m npm , there is a view of the city of Krakow, which is around 100 m below. When the view is clear, mostly in spring, the Beskydy promontory and the High Tatras are visible.
The Balice toll station is located on the A4 .
history
The place was mentioned in the papal bull of Gregory IX in 1229 . first mentioned in a document for the Abbey of Tyniec near Kraków as Balici . The name is patronymically derived from the Christian personal name Bal (≤ Baltazar ) with the typical West Slavic suffix - (ow) ice.
The village often belonged to rich Krakow families: Boner, Firlej , Szembek . Around 1520 Seweryn Borek, a relative of Fryderyk Schyling, founded a paper mill in Balice. A Reformed church existed there around 1600 .
During the third partition of Poland in 1795, Balice became part of the Habsburg Empire . In the years 1815-1846 the village belonged to the Republic of Krakow , in 1846 it was annexed again as part of the Grand Duchy of Krakow to the countries of the Austrian Empire. From 1855, Balice was part of the Kraków district .
In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Balice became part of Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the Krakow district in the General Government .
Between 1954 and 1968 the place was the administrative seat of the Gromada Balice of the same name . From 1975 to 1998 Balice was part of the Kraków Voivodeship .
