Polonicus Prize

The Polonicus Prize honors people who have made a contribution to the dialogue with and promotion of Poles in Europe and the world. The first award took place on the day of the Polish Diaspora Abroad ( Polonia ) on May 2, 2009 during a festival in the border triangle of Belgium / Netherlands / Germany. Since 2010, the award ceremony has been held on the occasion of the European Polonia Day at the annual Polonia Gala in the Coronation Hall of Aachen City Hall. The initiator of the award is the jury chairman Wiesław Lewicki , a long-time activist of the Polish community in Germany and president of the European Institute for Culture and Media Management and media officer for Polonicus .

Basic idea

The basic idea of the Polonicus Prize is based on the saying “we should respect one another, because then others will also respect us”. The award is given for the promotion and dissemination of Polish values in Europe. The award is given to people who are actively working on European unification, who promote European integration, or who contribute to the creation of a positive image for Poles in the world.

Patron of the Polonicus Award

The “Congress of German Polonia” and the Convention of Polish Organizations in Germany were among the first sponsors of the Polonicus Prize. Since 2012 the award has taken on a European character and the EUWP - European Union of Polish Communities - has acted as a sponsor. In the first two editions of the Polonicus Prize, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Berlin, Marek Prawda , personally supported the prize. The chairman of the RP Senate, Bogdan Borusewicz , has been responsible for the funding since 2011 .

The figure Polonicus

The figure Polonicus is a winged, youthful figure. This is made from a bronze cast with a height of 38 cm. The figure was inspired by Wiesław Lewicki and the manufacturer is the artist Stanislaw Szroborz, winner of a competition in 2008. Initially the statue base was made of bronze, but nowadays it is made of marble. The name of the institution and the year of award are engraved on the base.
