AS Monaco Basket is a basketball team that belongs to the Monegasque football club AS Monaco .

history

Beginnings (1924–1976)

The basketball team was launched in 1924, five years after the parent club was founded. The greatest success was celebrated in 1950 when the team became French runners-up. After winning the group B of the regular season, which was split into two groups at that time, the team prevailed in the semi-finals in the play-offs for the championship against Paris Basket Racing and moved into the final. This was lost with 40:52 against ASVEL Lyon .

In the first professional basketball league in France, the Nationale 1 , which was founded in 1963, AS Monaco first took part in the 1973/74 season and finished ninth, after which it was allowed to participate in the Korać Cup , there until the last 16 succeeded. Also due to the double burden, the team was only 13th in the national league and was relegated.

Successful times (1976–1991)

Between 1976 and 1991 the club was a permanent member of the top division, which was renamed LNB Pro A in 1987 . Until 1986 the team always occupied a place in the secured midfield, only in 1982 the fourth place was reached, whereupon the next participation in the Korać Cup followed. Monaco reached the top 16 again, finished second in the group behind MBK Dynamo Moscow and narrowly missed the semi-finals.

In 1983 the club reached the final of the Coupe de la Fédération , the four-time trophy for the best teams in France. The game was lost against CSP Limoges with 81:96. Since Limoges was also champion in the season and took part in the national championship cup , Monaco got the place in the European Cup Winners' Cup , where they failed in the round of 16 at BSC Saturn Cologne .

In the 1986/87 season, the team was second in the regular season and went into the play-offs for the championship with good conditions. In the quarterfinals they defeated ESM Challans and were closer to winning the title than ever before. In the semifinals, the team met Limoges CSP again and lost the first leg away with 98-106. The second leg in Monaco at home should have been won with nine basket points to move into the final. In fact, AS Monaco led for a long time, but in the end it was only enough to a 96:96 draw, which meant that the final was missed. The following season they finished second in the preliminary round, but failed in the play-offs in the quarter-finals at ABC Nantes .

Relegation to the lower leagues (1991-2015)

After Monaco was the last Pro A in the 1990/91 season with only three wins and was relegated to the second division, a return to the top division was not achieved for a long time. At times the club played in the Nationale 1 , the third division.

Promotion to the 1st division (2015–)

In the season 2014/15 Monaco celebrated the championship in the second division LNB Pro B . This secured promotion to the French premier league after 24 years. Currently Monaco now occurs again in the LNB Pro A on.
