Magüi Serna (born March 1, 1979 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ; actually Maria Luisa Serna ) is a former Spanish tennis player .

Career

Magüi Serna, who started playing tennis at the age of five and preferably played on grass, turned pro at 17. In 1996 she was in the junior finals of the French Open .

In her professional career, she won three singles and two doubles on the WTA Tour . At ITF tournaments, she has won six singles and one doubles.

In 1997 she made her debut in a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open as a qualifier . In her first year as a professional, she reached at least the third round in all four Grand Slam tournaments. At the US Open , she was even in the round of 16 for the first time. In 1998 she reached the quarter-finals at Hilton Head after defeating third-placed Jana Novotná, as well as the last sixteen at the French Open and Wimbledon . In 1999 she played her first WTA semi-final in Birmingham .

In 2000 she moved into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon with a victory over number 3 seeded Mary Pierce . In 2001 she was in the finals of the WTA tournaments in Porto and Eastbourne , and in Knokke-Heist she secured her first WTA double title at the side of her compatriot Virginia Ruano-Pascual . Her highlights in 2002 were her participation in the semi-finals with Conchita Martínez in the doubles competition at the Australian Open and her first WTA title in Estoril . In 2003, two more tournament victories followed within two weeks, again in Estoril and Budapest, as well as the round of 16 at the French Open. In 2004 she managed her second WTA double title in Eastbourne.

At the beginning of 2004 she achieved her best ranking in individual with 19th place in the WTA world rankings. She played her last professional match in October 2006 at an ITF tournament in Barcelona.
