The 33rd Australian Championships were a tennis grass court tournament in the Grand Slam class , which was organized by the ILTF . It took place January 19-29, 1940 in Sydney , Australia .
Defending champions in the singles were John Bromwich for men and Emily Westacott for women. In the men's doubles were John Bromwich and Adrian Quist , in the women's doubles Thelma Coyne and Nancye Wynne were the defending champions. In mixed, Nell Hopman and Harry Hopman were the defending champions.
