The women's singles at the 1940 Australian Championships was a tennis competition in Sydney .

Last year's winner was Emily Westacott . In the final, which took place on January 29, 1940, Nancye Wynne prevailed against Thelma Coyne with 5: 7, 6: 4 and 6: 0. For Wynne it was the second title at the Australian Championships after 1937 .
