Eleanor "Nell" Mary Hall Hopman (born March 19, 1909 in Sydney , † January 10, 1968 in Hawthorn , Victoria , Australia ) was an Australian tennis player from 1930 to the early 1960s. She was the first wife of Australian tennis legend Harry Hopman .

Career

Hopman won a total of four mixed titles at the Australian tennis championships (now the Australian Open ) with her husband in 1930, 1936, 1937 and 1939 . They both reached the final at Wimbledon in 1935 as mixed doubles .

Nell Hopman was also in Australia in 1939 and 1947 in the finals of the individual competition. In 1954, fifteen years after her last triumph, she and her doubles partner, the American Maureen Connolly , won the women's doubles at the French tennis championships (now the French Open ).

The Australian competed in 58 individual competitions in Grand Slam tournaments and was 57 years old when she ended her active tennis career. From 1952 she worked for the United States Lawn Tennis Association and the Southern California Tennis Association .

Nell Hall Hopman died in early 1968 as a result of an operation that she had to undergo for a brain tumor .

Personal

On February 13, 1934, she became engaged to Harry Hopman. The wedding took place on March 19, 1934 in Sydney .
