Anthony ("Tony") Dalton Roche (born May 17, 1945 in Wagga Wagga ) is a former Australian tennis player .

Career

Tony Roche won a total of 11 singles and 18 doubles titles in his career.

He won the men's singles title at the French championships in 1966 and was in the finals at Wimbledon in 1968 and the US Open in 1969 and 1970 .

In doubles he won the title five times at the Australian Open (1965, 1967, 1971, 1976, 1977), also five times at Wimbledon (1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974), twice (1967, 1969) at the French Open and once (1967) at the US Open . He is one of the few players who have achieved a career Grand Slam and with a total of 13 Grand Slam titles one of the most successful doubles players ever. His regular doubles partner was John Newcombe .

He won the Davis Cup with the Australian team in 1964 , 1965 , 1966 , 1967 , 1974 and 1978 .

His highest placements in the world rankings introduced by the players' union ATP in the early 1970s, he reached eighth on November 16, 1975 and 12th on August 30, 1977. Roche was still in the double world rankings until 1984.

Trainer

After his career as a player, Roche became a coach. His most prominent protégé after Ivan Lendl was Roger Federer .

In May 2007, Roger Federer separated from Tony Roche. Then he was hired in July 2007 by Lleyton Hewitt , who promised to return to the top with his help. The collaboration ended in 2009, but resumed in November 2010.
