The 2005 WTA Championships (also known as the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships ) was an indoor hard court tennis tournament for women in Los Angeles , United States . The tournament took place from November 8th to 13th, 2005 at the Staples Center .
The Russian Marija Sharapova in singles and the duo Nadeschda Petrowa and Meghann Shaughnessy in doubles were the defending champions.
The individual winner was Amélie Mauresmo , who defeated Mary Pierce 5: 7, 7: 6, 3 and 6: 4. Lisa Raymond / Samantha Stosur won the double title against Cara Black / Rennae Stubbs 6: 7, 5 , 7: 5 and 6: 4

Competition mode
In the round-robin phase (Engl. Round Robin ), played four players in two groups each against all. The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, which were played according to the knockout system . The winner of each group played against the second in the other group and the winners of those games played the final.
