The 2006 WTA Championships (also known as the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships ) was an indoor hard court tennis tournament for women in Madrid , Spain . The tournament took place from November 7th to 12th, 2006 and was held for the first time in Madrid.
The French woman Amélie Mauresmo in singles and the duo Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur in doubles were the defending champions.
The individual winner was Justine Henin-Hardenne , who defeated Amélie Mauresmo 5: 7, 7: 6, 3 and 6: 4. The defending champions secured the double title. They won the final again against Cara Black / Rennae Stubbs 3: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 3.

In the round-robin phase (Engl. Round Robin ), played four players in two groups each against all. The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, which were played according to the knockout system . The winner of each group played against the second in the other group and the winners of those games played the final.
