life and career

2002–2006: Junior career and first experiences as a professional

Matthias Bachinger started playing tennis at the age of six. Between 2002 and 2005 he played on the junior tour and reached number 146 in the junior world rankings.

In 2005, Bachinger decided to pursue a career as a professional tennis player. As early as 2004 he was able to collect his first world ranking points at future and satellite tournaments. In August 2005 he reached the final of a future tournament for the first time. In 2006, three more future finals followed, one of which he was able to win. He also reached the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament twice this year and climbed to 332th place in the world rankings .

2007: ATP debut and first Challenger title

In 2007 things continued to improve: In April 2007 Matthias Bachinger was able to qualify for an ATP tournament in his hometown of Munich for the first time and won his first ATP match in the first main round against Andreas Beck . In the second round against Marcos Baghdatis , who was fourth , Bachinger lost in three sets after more than two hours of play. In May 2007 Bachinger tried for the first time at the French Open to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament, but failed just like a month later at Wimbledon in the first qualifying round. In October 2007 he achieved the greatest triumph of his career to date in Louisville : By defeating John Isner , he reached a Challenger final for the first time, where he met the American hopeful Donald Young . The American won the first set with 6: 0, but the German won the following sets with 7: 5, 6: 3. In the world rankings, he then reached a new personal record with rank 179.

2008–2010: Establishment on the Challenger Tour

In February 2008 Matthias Bachinger qualified for the second time for an ATP tournament in Rotterdam . He was eliminated in the first round against Michael Berrer . In the further course of the year he was able to qualify for the ATP tournaments in Kitzbühel and Stockholm and also received a wildcard in Munich . However, first round defeats followed. On the Challenger Tour, Bachinger reached two finals this year: In March 2008 he lost to local hero Gō Soeda in Kyoto , and in Freudenstadt he lost to Simon Greul . Nevertheless, after the final defeat in Freudenstadt in September 2008, he reached 167th place, his best world ranking position to date.

In January 2009, Matthias Bachinger failed to qualify for the Australian Open just in the third round to Björn Phau . The third qualifying round was also the end of the line at Wimbledon , and he was also unable to qualify at other ATP tournaments this year. At Challenger tournaments this year he never made it past the quarter-finals, but remained consistently in the top 300 of the world rankings. In July 2009 in Rimini , he won his first Challenger title alongside Dieter Kindlmann in doubles .

The first months of 2010 were very unsuccessful for Matthias Bachinger. It was only in May 2010 that he was able to reach a Challenger quarter-finals in Cremona for the first time in over half a year . A month later he was even back in a Challenger semi-finals in Bytom . After he was eliminated again in the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Guangzhou in March 2011 , he reached his first Challenger final of the year in Pingguo a week later . There he lost to Go Soeda just as three years earlier . A month later, Bachinger reached his next Challenger final in Athens without losing a set. Since his opponent there, Dmitri Tursunow, could not compete due to a knee injury, Bachinger won his first title this year without a fight, making it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. In early June 2011 he missed another Challenger tournament victory when he was defeated in Nottingham in the final Gilles Müller in two sets. Two weeks later, Matthias Bachinger made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon . However, he was eliminated there in the first round in three sets against Gaël Monfils , who was in ninth place . At the beginning of July 2011 Bachinger won the first ATP match of the year against Dustin Brown in Newport , before he was eliminated in the second round against Matthew Ebden . At the following tournament in Granby , Matthias Bachinger reached a Challenger final for the fourth time this year, but lost in three sets against Édouard Roger-Vasselin . Two days later, Bachinger retired from the ATP tournament in Atlanta in the first round against Lu Yen-hsun . In doubles, however, he was able to reach an ATP final for the first time together with Frank Moser , which they just lost. The following week Matthias Bachinger defeated a top 50 player in Gstaad with Pablo Andújar, who was seeded in 7th position, for the first time in his career, but was then eliminated in the second round against Julien Benneteau . In the first round of the US Open 2011 / men's singles , Bachinger already led 2-0 sets against Igor Kunizyn , but lost the match in five sets. At the end of September 2011, Matthias Bachinger reached an ATP quarter-finals in Bangkok for the first time, where he met Gilles Simon , who was third . After he had reached the second round of an ATP tournament in Zagreb for the second time this year, first round defeats in Rotterdam , Marseille , Delray Beach and Indian Wells followed in the following weeks , which finally left Bachinger out of the top 100. 2018: First ATP final

The first months of 2018 were passable for Bachinger. At Challengers he never got past the quarterfinals and on the ATP World Tour he was only in the main field at the tournaments in Munich and Halle . In the former, he won his only match of the year on the World Tour to date. In September Bachinger reached his thirteenth Challenger final in Manacor , which he lost to the Australian Bernard Tomic . Three weeks later, Bachinger achieved his greatest success to date as a qualifier at the hard court tournament in Metz : After a surprise victory in Bachinger's third ATP semifinals against world number twelfth and seeding list first Kei Nishikori , he moved into the final of the indoor tournament. In the final, Bachinger lost to Frenchman Gilles Simon in straight sets.
