Last year's winner in the singles was the Briton Andy Murray , but he failed in the round of 16 against the Argentine Juan Mónaco . The two Spaniards Marcel Granollers and David Ferrer contested the final , which Ferrer won 7: 5, 6: 3. While it was already the 19th final on the ATP World Tour for Ferrer (he won in Valencia in 2008 , among others ), it was only the second participation in the final for Granollers, who was four years his junior and only entered the main competition as a lucky loser after his triumph in Houston in 2008 . In addition to Murray and Ferrer, two other former Valencia winners took part in the tournament: Nicolás Almagro (2006, 2007) and Fernando Verdasco (2004).
The Czech František Čermák and the Slovak Michal Mertiňák competed in doubles to defend their title. However, they failed in the quarterfinals to the later finalists Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirny . The victory went to the British brothers Andy and Jamie Murray , who had only been admitted to the main competition through a wildcard. In the final they won 6: 3, 7: 5 and thus their first joint title.
