The line 5 (span. Línea 5 , shortly L-5) is a metro -line of the Metro Madrid . It leads from Alameda de Osuna to Casa de Campo , is 23.2 kilometers long and has 32 stations. The average station distance is 748 meters.

The L-5 is the last line that was built in the small profile, all subsequent lines were built in the large profile; the platform length is 90 meters. With a depth of 28 meters, the La Latina station is the deepest station in the small-profile network. Short sections at Aluche and Casa de Campo run above ground, the rest of the route is completely underground.

You can change to other metro lines at eleven stations, and at three stations to the Cercanías suburban railway . Casa de Campo is the only station in the small-profile network where you can change trains on the same platform.

history

The first (but not the oldest) section of the L-5 is the section between Carabanchel and Callao , which opened on June 5, 1968 . The new line did not prove to be particularly successful at the beginning because the metro company demanded higher fares than usual in the first few years. The route was then extended on March 2, 1970 from Callao to Ventas . On the same day, the L-5 also took over the Ventas - Ciudad Lineal section , which had been used by the L-2 since 1964 .

In 1970 the narrow-gauge railway to Móstoles was closed and replaced by a railway line in Spanish broad-gauge by 1976 . The suburban line also stopped in Aluche , among other places . In order to improve connections, the L-5 took over on October 29, 1976 the section of the L-10 between Carabanchel and Aluche, which had existed since 1961 .

On January 18, 1980, the new section between Ciudad Lineal and Canillejas followed . Since then, the L-5 has served as the access route for all small-profile lines to the main workshop, which is located on an extensive area between Canillejas and Las Musas (terminus of the L-7 ). Between Carabanchel and Aluche , the intermediate station Eugenia de Montijo opened on October 27, 1999 ; this is located directly at the tunnel exit. On October 22, 2002, the L-5 also took over the Aluche - Casa de Campo section , which had been part of the L-10 since 1961. On November 24, 2006, the extension from Canillejas to Alameda de Osuna was put into operation.

Route

Planned extension to the airport

In spring 2020 it was confirmed that line 5 should be extended by 1.5 km from the current terminus Alameda de Osuna to Barajas Airport. The new terminus will be Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 . This is currently only served by line 8 and is to be generously converted to accommodate the expected larger number of passengers. The planners assume that the number of passengers in the airport area will increase by up to 50%. The construction costs are estimated at around 75 million euros.
