The line R is a subway -line of Metro Madrid , wherein the R is an abbreviation of the Spanish word Ramal is ( "branch"). It is a short feeder line with no intermediate stops between the city center ( Ópera station ) and Príncipe Pío train station . The line is 1092 meters long, making it the shortest underground line in Europe. A single train with four cars shuttles back and forth between the terminus. The route is double-track, but there is only one platform in each of the two stations.

Line R was opened on December 27, 1925. The private metro company, which had already had good experience with its first routes, also wanted to connect the north station ( Estación del Norte , today Príncipe Pío ) with the short feeder . This station is deep in the valley of the Manzanares ; the trams could only run very slowly on the steep road, which is why the R line meant a considerable gain in time.

In August 1936, a few weeks after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War , traffic on the R line had to be stopped; the north station had been cut off from its hinterland so that there were hardly any passengers. After the end of the war in March 1939, operations were resumed.

For decades, the R line was the only metro line that opened up the Nordbahnhof. This changed in the early 1990s. The long-distance trains to the northwest was passed to the railway station Chamartin to built the terminus station into a powerful transit station for Cercanías to -Vorortzüge. The existing subway station was expanded into an important transfer hub, at which the L-6 and L-10 have since stopped .
