The line 12 (span. Linea 12 , short L-12) is a subway -line of Metro Madrid . This line, also known as MetroSur ("Südmetro"), is the only one of the entire network that runs completely outside the urban area of Madrid. As a ring route, it connects the suburbs of Alcorcón , Leganés , Getafe , Fuenlabrada and Móstoles to the south . In 2005 these five cities had a combined population of over 900,000, and the trend is rapidly increasing.

The route is 40.96 km long, has 28 stations and is part of the large profile network. The stations are uniformly 115 m long; the average station distance is 1.450 kilometers. A link with the rest of the Madrid Metro network is only available at Puerta del Sur in Alcorcón, the terminus of the L-10 . In contrast, there are six stations where you can change trains to four different lines from Cercanías , the S-Bahn in the capital region.

In addition to extensive residential and industrial areas, the L-12 also opens up the various locations of two universities, the Universidad Carlos III and the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos . Although the route partly leads through unbuilt terrain, it is completely underground. This should not affect the forecast rapid settlement development. The areas directly above the tunnel belong to a large part of the metro company. The plan is to refinance the construction of the route through the sale of these plots as soon as the property prices rise above the price level at the time of purchase.

Construction work began in April 2000. Three years later, on April 11, 2003, the L-12 was commissioned along its entire length. On the same day, the L-10 was also extended from Colonia Jardín to Puerta del Sur , creating a connection to the rest of the network. A total of 47 kilometers of new metro lines were opened in a single day, more than ever before in all of Europe.

An extension of the L-3 to Getafe is planned. A second connection to the rest of the metro network is to be established there at El Casar station . In the medium term, new stations are to be added to the existing route if the settlement develops accordingly.
