Phil Rudd (born May 19, 1954 in Melbourne , Australia as Phillip Hugh Norman Witschke Rudzevecius ) was the long-time drummer of the Australian hard rock band AC / DC . He recorded 13 of the band's 16 studio albums. In 2016, Rolling Stone listed him as 86th of the 100 best drummers of all time .

Career

First bands

Phil Rudd first played with Colored Balls and Buster Brown from Melbourne.

AC / DC

Rudd joined AC / DC in January 1975 through ex-bandmate Trevor Young. In 1983 he dropped out of AC / DC due to drug and mental health problems; he had never really come to terms with the death of AC / DC singer Bon Scott . His last concert with the band was on December 12, 1982 in Zurich . He was replaced by Simon Wright .

Rudd got involved in a helicopter company (he has a flight license) and later devoted himself to his farm in New Zealand , on which he built his own recording studio . He is also an avid car fan.

In 1995, after a twelve-year hiatus, he returned to AC / DC, where he replaced Chris Slade . Since the group split from Mark Evans in 1977, he has been the only native Australian with AC / DC.

Rudd married Lisa O'Brien from New Zealand in 1983. They have five children together. In 2006 the couple separated.

Private problems and end at AC / DC (from 2014)

In early November 2014, New Zealand prosecutors brought charges against Rudd on suspicion of having commissioned the murder of two people. However, the charges were withdrawn shortly afterwards due to a lack of evidence. However, charges of possession of marijuana and methamphetamines were followed up, as was charges of threat of murder. Then Rudd's private life came into focus. Tabloids reported about sex parties and excessive excesses. Angus Young and Cliff Williams reiterated their impression that Rudd doesn't seem the same as he used to be. Rudd was temporarily under house arrest. The band did not rule out touring without him. According to Williams, it was already difficult to get him into the studio to record the tracks for the album Rock or Bust . He was very unreliable and often appeared in poor condition.

On November 26, 2014, Rudd appeared 15 minutes late for a court hearing, which would have resulted in an arrest warrant; He had also not appeared for the preliminary meeting with his lawyer. He was still allowed to leave the court on bail. In front of the courthouse, he insulted photographers and almost caused an accident. A few days earlier, he had been photographed outside his home despite house arrest.

In early February 2015 it was announced that he was about to be tried for drug possession and threat of murder. A short time later, the band announced that Rudd would be replaced by former drummer Chris Slade for appearances at the 2015 Grammy Awards and on the Rock or Bust Tour due to pending legal proceedings .

In April 2015, Rudd pleaded guilty to threatening to murder a business partner in September 2014. He also admitted his former assistants 200,000 New Zealand dollars (about 143,000 euros ), a motorcycle, and one of his cars or house, have offered, "get rid" is one of its employees. The offer was made several times. During a house search, the police found 91 grams of marijuana in a container that Rudd had previously placed on the floor during a conversation. She found half a gram of methamphetamine in his pocket

In May 2015, he made his first public statement on the Australian broadcaster Channel Nine, stating that the incident in question had come about due to problems and the flop of his debut solo album Head Job in 2014. He regrets the incident and the fact that he was unable to keep in touch with his bandmates. He tries to contact Angus Young by mail.

On July 9, 2015, Rudd was sentenced by a Tauranga court to eight months of house arrest and a drug rehab program. The judge viewed the death threats as a result of the substance abuse. If Rudd continues to be proven drugs, he faces jail time.

On July 19, 2015, Rudd was arrested again and had to appear in court the next day. He was accused of drinking alcohol and violating his requirements. He himself pleaded not guilty. Rudd was released back into house arrest on bail until a later court hearing.

Sonor Phil Rudd Signature Snare Drum

Badge of the Sonor Phil Rudd Signature Snare Drum

Also in 2009 Sonor presented the Phil Rudd Signature Snare Drum. It is Rudd's favorite snare, based on the 14x5 "Horst Link Signature Snare with a brass shell.

The snare consists of a 14x5 "chrome-plated brass shell, about 1.2 mm thick. Equipped with cast hoops with 10-part divisions, it has a good sound for rimshots. It is delivered with Remo made in China heads, which should be exchanged for better quality ones. as it improves the sound a lot. Sonor's well-known "TuneSafe" has built into the snare lugs, which prevents independent detuning, the screws are underlaid with rubber pads. Furthermore, two badges adorn the shell, one round and one, which is the badges of the Horst Link Signature Series is modeled on, here is also the signature of Rudd engraved.

Since he was presented with the snare at a Germany concert in 2009, he has been playing it alternately with the Horst Link Signature.

Ahead Phil Rudd Signature Sticks

Ahead has had the Phil Rudd Signature Sticks in its range for some time. However, it is only an extended 5a model. As mentioned above, Rudd plays a 5b in his right hand and a custom model (double-end) on the left which was specially made for him.
