Live , also known under the name AC / DC Live is the second official live album of the Australian hard rock - band AC / DC . It was recorded in 1990 and 1991 and was released on October 21, 1992 on Atco, a sub-label of Atlantic Records .

background

Since AC / DC have not yet released a compilation album and Live contains the band's most important hits, the album can serve as a replacement for a best-of compilation. It is also the first time in the history of the band that their most famous songs appear in live versions. Although was with If You Want Blood You've Got It came in 1978, a live album from AC / DC to the market, but this had been taken before the big commercial breakthrough of the band, which is why many songs that are now considered classics missing. In addition, this was recorded with the singer Bon Scott , who died in 1980 .

The live version of Highway to Hell with the instrumental Bonny as an intro was released as a single and reached # 14 in the UK Top 40. Bonny uses the melody of The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond and is dedicated to Bon Scott. Unlike If You Want Blood You've Got It , the songs were not completely cut together, most of the songs are faded out on both album versions before another song follows. Only a few songs that are (more or less) recorded together have a smooth transition.

Live was AC / DC's last album release with Chris Slade on drums. This was followed by the single Big Gun for the soundtrack for “The Last Action Hero”. For the follow-up album Ballbreaker , Phil Rudd returned, who had already played on the band's first albums.

reception

AC / DC play Whole Lotta Rosie live in Madrid, Spain (2009)

Live was released at the same time as a single-disc version and as a double album with the addition of 2 CD Collector's Edition . The album benefited from the great success of the previous album The Razors Edge and achieved quite good chart positions . So it came in the US Billboard 200 to number 15, in the British album charts even to number 5, as well as in Germany. In Australia it was the band's first album since For Those About to Rock in 1981, which reached the top position. Separately from the single-disc version, the Collector's Edition made it into the US Billboard 200 at number 34.

The album was also received rather positively by the critics. For example, the HiFi magazine Audio wrote : “Anyone who likes the snotty rock of the Young & Co. brothers will hardly be disappointed by this powerful concert can. Live , the tried and tested hard rock from Australia does not open up any new musical worlds compared to the studio albums, but as a best-of collection it goes through with ease. And either as a double-decker with 23 pieces for fans who really need everything, or in the light version with only 14 titles, which still contains enough standard works from all creative phases. "

Opinions are somewhat divided in Rock Hard magazine . In 1992, Frank Albrecht published the following verdict in issue 66: “Exactly 13 years have passed since the legendary first AC / DC live LP was released. That this band is still very popular is amazing and well deserved by consistently honest music and live shows. But that AC / DC would achieve the cult status of that LP again was ruled out from the start. At most, the CD bootleg of a Hammersmith show from 1979, which was recorded by a radio station at the time, manages that. Nevertheless, the now released live double album has its charms, because live recordings with Brian Johnson have so far been in short supply and can only be found on single B-sides. In addition, the complete show of last year's tour is offered with 23 songs, which is not exactly common. And yet I somehow miss the courage to take risks on this work. Everything sounds too smooth, too perfect, as if the part had been extensively reworked. In addition, the audience was mixed too much into the background. Usually the fans are louder than the band at the set opener Thunderstruck . You don't hear them at all on this album. Musically AC / DC can of course convince, but a little more naturalness would not have hurt the matter. ”He awarded eight out of ten possible points. In a later review in the same magazine, Götz Kühnemund was more impressed and summarized: “Finally! Europe's AC / DC fans had to wait 16 years and be content with expensive bootlegs before they were allowed to hold this noble double live album in their trembling fingers! And the mistakes of If You Want Blood ... were avoided this time: The production sounds absolutely authentic, and all the classics that fit into a two-hour program have been included. From Thunderstruck to Back in Black and Sin City to For Those About to Rock , all standards are included in gripping versions, sung by Brian with astonishing power and confidence. Great! ” Götz Kühnemund gave full marks in his review.
