Loch Lomond (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lyrics
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond.
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Refrain:
Oh ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,
Where in deep purple hue the Hieland hills we view,
And the moon comin' out in the gloamin '.

Refrain

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping;
But the broken heart will ken nae second spring again,
Tho 'the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

refrain

The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond (roughly: The beautiful banks of Loch Lomond ) is a Scottish traditional .

The melody was first recorded in Vocal Melodies of Scotland around 1841 , but initially with a different text version.

history

Loch Lomond

According to one of the numerous legends about the origin of the text, two men from the entourage of Bonnie Prince Charlie are said to have been captured in 1745 after the failed second Jacobite revolt . One was released, the other condemned to death: the released man goes home the High Road (the way over the mountains), while the executed man can only get to his loved one via the Low Road - the way of the dead through the underworld.

Recordings

Loch Lomond is repeatedly interpreted by numerous folk bands and other artists. Runrig , like the Quadriga Consort, often played this song at the end of their concerts.

Martha Tilton sang it at The Famous Carnegie Hall Concert in 1938 by Benny Goodman & his Orchestra. Martha Tilton also took over the vocal part on the studio recording, which was already published at the time, because Benny Goodman published the piece on shellac in the USA in 1937 . It was released on Victor 25717 along with the swing instrumental classic Camel Hop .

Loch Lomond's other performers include The King's Singers , AC / DC , The Real McKenzies , Paddy Schmidt , The Corries , Matt McGinn , Kathy Kelly , An Cat Dubh , Rapalje , Marillion , Judy Collins , The Sandsacks , Dale Wilde Band , Saltatio Mortis , Peter Hollens and Claymore as well as Kurt Equiluz with a German version. The song was also sung in the GDR in the 1970s by Monika Hauff and Klaus-Dieter Henkler . There is also an Irish version with different text under the title Red is the Rose .

The fan anthem of 1. FC Köln Mer stonn zo dir FC Kölle from the Höhnern from 1998 is also based on the melody from Loch Lomond . Even Steve Martin has the melody in his song Clawhammer Medley from album The Crow: New Songs for the 5 string banjo used.
