The song begins with 4 strikes of a deep bell . While this continues to ring, Angus Young starts on lead guitar, followed by his brother Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Phil Rudd on drums and Cliff Williams on bass. Finally Brian Johnson sings over the sound constructed in this way.

The singer assumes the role of a hell angel in the lyrics , sent by the devil to kidnap the anonymously addressed listener of the song to hell. The singer compares himself to the irrepressible forces of nature such as thunder, lightning and storms, and emphasizes that resistance is futile.

production

The album Back in Black was the first with the new singer Brian Johnson after the original singer Bon Scott died. The song Hells Bells is understood as a tribute to Bon Scott.

The song was recorded in the spring of 1980 at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas with producer Robert Lange . The single was released on July 25, 1980, the B-side was What Do You Do for Money Honey . The credits list Angus Young, Malcolm Young, and Brian Johnson.

In addition to being released on Back in Black , the song also appeared on the soundtrack album Who Made Who and on the live album, as well as in the remastered version of Back in Black in the Bonfire box set .

A special bell was re-cast on behalf of the band for the recording. Due to time constraints, an attempt was first made to capture a bell from the War Memorial Campanile in Loughborough in Leicestershire . However, the reception of the bell was disturbed by the fluttering of the pigeons in the tower. So the recording was made at the last minute with the new bell. This bell with a weight of one short ton was also used as a touring instrument until 1980.

reception

The song has been one of AC / DC's most popular songs since its release and is used at many events and TV shows. Several football clubs, such as For example, FC St. Pauli , FC Winterthur , FC Schalke 04 and FK Austria Wien use Hells Bells as warm-up music for their home games. The Swiss ice hockey team SC Bern also uses this song as warm-up music. The Swiss radio station Radio 3fach plays the song every night at 0:00.
