history

A 0.5 liter bottle of Dr Pepper

The story of Dr Pepper is initially similar to that of Coca-Cola . The pharmacist Charles Alderton invented the drink in 1885, making it a year older older than Coca-Cola and thirteen years as Pepsi 's. First he sold Dr Pepper in Waco , Texas . At the Louisiana Purchase Exposition , the 1904 World's Fair , US-wide sales began. Nevertheless, Dr Pepper is still often associated with Texas today, especially since it can often achieve higher sales there than Pepsi.

distribution

Dr Pepper is available in Germany as a 0.33 liter can, 0.5 liter disposable bottle, 1.0 liter disposable and returnable bottle and 1.25 liter disposable bottle. There have not been any major advertising campaigns so far, which is why Dr Pepper is less well known in Germany compared to the competition.

Surname

The origin of the name Dr Pepper is controversial. Officially, it is said that Morrison named the drink after the name of the father of a young girl he was once in love with.

The original name Dr. Pepper was changed in the 1950s for visual and content-related reasons by removing the point: The point had made the "Dr." look like "Di:" and the medical connotation should be further weakened.

product

It is believed that Dr Pepper's taste originated from a blend of popular soda flavors dating back to around 1885. A selection of the list of these flavors is on display at the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco . The full recipe for Dr Pepper is, however, a company secret. In order to counter a widespread modern legend , the manufacturer announced that it contains 23 fruit and spice aromas, but no plum juice.

The following ingredients are indicated on the product packaging or the Dr Pepper labels: water , sugar , carbonic acid , caramel coloring (E150d) , acidifier phosphoric acid , aroma , caffeine aroma , acesulfame-K and sucralose sweetener .

Former products

Dr Pepper Berries & Cream was produced from April 2006 to July 2008.

Special

The oldest bottling partner in Dublin , Texas , refused in the 1960s to replace the expensive cane sugar with cheaper corn syrup in production. Therefore, for a long time, Dr Pepper could only be purchased in its original form there and within a 40 mile radius. From 2003 the so-called Dublin Dr Pepper was sold as a curiosity in most other regions of Texas. In 2012, Dr Pepper Snapple Group's bottling partner was sued for trademark infringement, after which Dublin Dr Pepper's production was discontinued. In the region around Dublin, Dr Pepper with cane sugar is sold by another contract partner without reference to Dublin.
