Sam and his science fiancée Alex move into the Laurel Canyon home of Jane, Sam's mother. Jane, her boyfriend Ian McKnight and his band are recording a music album there. Jane's presence disrupts her son's relationship, who meets the Israeli- born Sara, whom he finds attractive. Meanwhile, Alex neglects her dissertation and spends more and more time with the musicians.

Reviews

Jamie Russell wrote for the BBC on November 12, 2003 that the film was "cute" and "wrinkled" ; it doesn't offer much substance. Christian Bale and Kate Beckinsale are in good shape. However, the film belongs to Frances McDormand, who plays a dysfunctional middle-aged woman.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a “somewhat lengthy study about the drifting apart of a couple whose camera work is limited to the mere filming of the dialog-heavy events” . He was "unspectacular" and convinced "mainly in the subplots and characters" .
