The girl (Original: The Girl ) is a Swedish art house - drama of Fredrik Edfeldt from the year 2009. The film tells the story of a girl without supervision tried for a whole summer to take care of. In particular, the “own visual style” and the “poetic images” of the cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema were very well received by critics and the public.

action

The girl is looking forward to her upcoming trip to Africa, where her parents will be working as development workers in the summer of 1981, but since she is too young, Sida refuses to allow her to travel and the parents decide to go alone and the girl to theirs To leave sister-in-law Anna. But they don't know how irresponsible Anna is, she drinks alcohol, celebrates and brings drunk people home to celebrate even more intensely. But on the phone she says everything is fine. It even comes to the point that she later simply disappears with one of her friends and leaves the girl alone.

From now on the girl has to look after herself. However, she pretends to the outside world that everything is fine, so that no one will notice that she is living alone. On the one hand, she is friends with Ola, the boy next door and the two girls Tina and Gisela. While Ola is a kind boy that the girl has fun with and is a good influence on, the other two girls have nothing on their minds but make-up, music and partying. And since they have no money for further make-up, they go through the village and cheat people out of their money by selling fake tickets. But when the dizziness is exposed, all three are lucky. So the girl spends a pleasant time with Ola, until Tina and Gisela intervene again and harass, humiliate and almost rape Ola. He then runs away crying and no longer wants to know anything about the girl, which also means that she no longer wants to know anything about Tina and Gisela.

One day Gunnar comes by and wants to wait until Anne appears again, because he suspects that she is neglecting her duty of care. But the girl does not admit that Anne has long since disappeared and Gunnar takes a sip or two of alcohol during a casual interrogation, so that he does not get far on his way home and already has an accident after the girl leaves the yard. As a result, he can be blackmailed by the girl, whereupon he assures her of his silence and 50 crowns .

And the girl uses this security to make friends with Ola again. He is happy and both are playing in Ola's barn at home and want to jump on hay from the barn's attic. But since the girl is afraid of heights, she delights herself and defends herself against Ola's friendly attempts to push her down so that he falls carelessly and hits his head on the concrete floor. The girl is horrified, runs away and watches anxiously as her friend is picked up by the ambulance. The girl flees from grief and pain and hides at home and breaks off all contact with the outside world, until one day a man makes an emergency landing with his hot air balloon on the property, is looked after by the girl and, with a big thank you, takes her on a little trip.

But the parents don't find out about all of this when they return from Africa after the summer, because Anne is back and pretends to have taken good care of the girl. And since the girl is also silent, the reunion is very emotional. Even Ola, whom she sees again after a while, is doing better. He just broke his leg and doesn't seem to hold grudges against the girl.

criticism

It is the “supernaturally beautiful pictures of Hoyte van Hoytema ”, said Malena Janson in the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet , who turned this film from the perspective of the little girl into a journey of “total happiness, deepest shame and a blurring of the boundaries between fantasy and Reality ”.

In the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet , Jens Peterson praised the cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema and his “sensitive images”, which capture a “timeless story” and turn it into a “sadly beautiful film”.

Miranda Sigander from the Swedish tabloid Expressen also praised the “very own visual style” of the cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema, who manages to forget the dialogues with “hyperrealistic and poetic [...] breathtaking images” to create an “existential drama “To be able to present, which is strongly reminiscent of the works of Terrence Malick . And the main actress Bianca Engtrom in particular shines in a life that is becoming "increasingly surreal and frightening".

In the American Variety magazine, Alissa Simon praised the teamwork between the scriptwriter, the director and the cameraman. With the help of van Hoytema's “lyrical recordings”, Fredrik Edfeldt would elicit some “subtle ideas” from the “sensitive, strong script”.

And although it is a "story about false and real friends [with] sad scenes", said Celine Thomas in the German daily Berliner Morgenpost , the "exciting and soulful" film about a "fearful girl who becomes a courageous girl" a happy ending.

background

In order to show the visual character of the film, which was intended from the beginning, a lighting designer was hired, among other things, who had already worked with the French director Jean-Luc Godard in the 1960s .

Fredrik Edfelt's production company Acne , which actually specializes in advertising films, contributed around 3 million of the 10 million euros in production costs. The film was shot within 40 days.

The story reflects on the one hand experiences and on the other hand also feelings of the childhood of the screenwriter. However, these elements were incorporated into an independent story.
