Lee-on-the-Solent or often simply Lee-on-Solent is a small coastal town on the Solent five miles west of Portsmouth . Lee-on-the-Solent is located in Hampshire in the south of England and had 7067 inhabitants at the 2001 census , the statistical updates now come to 7300 inhabitants. Administratively, the parish is part of the Borough of Gosport . Lee-on-the-Solent is a typical dormitory town with commuters to Portsmouth and Southampton . The place is well known for spending summer holidays here, but Lee-on-the-Solent is probably even better known for one of the first Fleet-Air-Arm bases in the period from 1917 to the Second World War. In the meantime the Royal Navy has withdrawn and the civilian Solent Airport is now a base for civil helicopter sea rescue on behalf of Her Majesty's Coastguard .

The name Lee comes from a stream that flows into the Solent here. Investors have been trying to colonize this coastal strip since the early 19th century. With the arrival of the navy in nearby Portsmouth, this stretch of coast also became interesting. At the latest with the construction of a pier and the connection to the railway network in the years 1884 to 1894, the place grew enormously. Pretty brick villas from this time still bear witness to this up-and-coming period. The railway traffic was stopped again in 1930; the decay and lack of capital to maintain the pier during World War II led to its demolition in 1958.

Cherque Farm

The popularity of the holiday resort has decreased somewhat in recent years, and younger active vacationers are now increasingly coming. Outside the actual development, the new Cherque Farm settlement for over a thousand people was laid out on a 40  hectare part of the former naval base . The houses have been ready for occupancy since the end of 2008. This measure can also explain the population increase since 2001.

Attractions

In addition to the long waterfront with great views of the Isle of Wight and the Solent , there are a number of other attractions:

  • The signal station is now the starting and finishing point for regattas throughout the year
  • The Hovercraft Museum houses the largest collection of these hovercraft, including the oldest and largest
  • Lee-on-the-Solent has a wide variety of bars, cafes and restaurants
