The Hispano Aviación HA-1112 was a Spanish further development of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 by the aircraft manufacturer Hispano Aviación .

History and construction

The entire Spanish (arms) industry was weakened after the civil war and was unable to keep up with the technological progress of other European countries. The reason for this was not only the poor infrastructure, but also the fact that after the outbreak of World War II, surplus armaments from other countries could be acquired cheaply.

Hispano-Suiza was a successful company that not only manufactured luxury automobiles, but also military trucks and aircraft engines. After Germany was due to the tense war situation no longer able to supply Spain with arms or to provide technical assistance, was a division of the company, Hispano Aviación SA, commissioned in 1943, 200 fighters of the type Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 to build under license.

The engine remained a problem, as there were no longer any German DB-605 engines available. For this reason, the company developed two versions of this aircraft, which differed in terms of the engine. For the first versions, the Hispano-Suiza 12Z engine, designed in France shortly before the outbreak of war , was used, with which the elegant lines (picture) of the original were retained. The armament was also revised and now consisted of automatic cannons and missiles. For the later construction lots, the choice fell on the Rolls-Royce-Merlin -500-45 engine, which was designed for bombers and was cheaply available from England as surplus goods ten years after the end of the war . The HA-1112 M1L version emerged from the coupling between this engine with its massive radiator, designed without regard to the streamline, combined with the delicate cell of the Bf 109 G-2. The fuselage and nose had to be redesigned to accommodate the larger engine, which gave the misshapen structure its characteristic appearance and from which the Spanish nickname "Buchón" (German: dove with a large goiter ) emerged.

The modifications to the engine, armament, fuselage and airframe took a long time, so that the HA-1112 M1L's maiden flight did not take place until 1954. The commissioning took place in 1956. A total of 172 machines were put into service with the Spanish Air Force (Ejército del Aire) and they flew until 1965. 25 of them came from German cells (without tail unit), the rest were newly built.

The last machines of the late 1950s with Merlin engines were still airworthy after retirement and were used with German emblems of the Third Reich in various English and US films. After being located Daimler-Benz engines from Swedish production, have been and are they gradually become replicas of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G rebuilt.
