Piper PA-60-600 Aerostar, built in 1977

The Piper PA-60 Aerostar is an American twin-engine light business jet developed by the Ted Smith Aircraft Company , which became part of the Piper Aircraft Corporation after 1978 .

development

Ted Smith flew the first Aerostar 600 in October 1967 . It was a monoplane with two Lycoming piston engines attached to the wings .

A turbocharged version, the Aerostar 601, was also flown .

The planes were built in Van Nuys when the company was bought by the American Cement Company in 1968 . The takeover was unsuccessful, however, and the company was sold back to Butler Aviation in 1969. The new company was called Aerostar Aircraft Corporation and the planes were then produced in Kerrville .

In 1972 Ted Smith bought back all rights to the aircraft so that he could produce more Aerostars, he also introduced the Aerostar 601P . The 601P had engines with more powerful turbochargers for the pressurized cabin. Another variant was the stretched Aerostar 700 Superstar .

In 1976 the company was renamed Ted Smith Aerostar Corporation.

In 1978 the company was taken over by Piper Aircraft Corporation , which continued to produce three variants (600A, 601B and 600P) and later reintroduced the 601P and 602P (also known as Sequoya ). After discontinuing production of non-pressurized models, Piper moved production to Vero Beach , where the last Aerostar was produced in 1984.
