The Piper J-4 Cub Coupe is the two-seat version of the Piper J-3 with side-by-side seats. It was built by the American manufacturer Piper Aircraft between 1938 and 1942 and was Piper's first model with this seat configuration. In connection with its good-natured flight behavior at low speeds, it was well suited as a training aircraft .

The design of the J-4 is based on the J-3 with various changes . Among other things, the fuselage was widened, the landing gear was equipped with an oil pressure suspension and the tail wheel was modified. The first J-4 were powered by a Continental A50 with overhead exhaust and open cowling . Although these aircraft had a comfortable cockpit, they were slower than contemporary aircraft with side-by-side seats.
From 1940, the J-4A was built with a closed cowling and a Continental A65 with a nominal output of 65 hp (48 kW) and an additional tank in the rear. A Franklin 4AC -171 with 60 hp (44 kW) was used in the J-4B . The last version of the J-4, the J-4E, was built from 1941. The interior of the J-4E was revised and the engine replaced by a Continental A75 with 75 PS (55 kW). In addition, the main fuel tank was relocated to the wings . The performance of the J-4 thus caught up with that of similar, contemporary models . However, the attack on Pearl Harbor ended the production of the J-4 because with the entry of the United States into World War II, the production of civil aircraft came to a complete standstill.
