The PA-12 Super Cruiser is a single-engine light aircraft produced by the US aircraft manufacturer Piper Aircraft Corporation .
history
The PA-12 made its maiden flight in 1945 and was ready for series production in February 1946.
A total of 3760 pieces were produced, including variants as seaplanes , which are still mainly used as bush planes today. The PA-12 is relatively rare in Germany, which is why well-preserved used copies, similar to the PA-18, are in great demand.
construction
The PA-12 is the successor to the Piper J-5 and has only minor visual changes. The machine is a three-seater version of Piper's tail wheel series with Lycoming carburetor boxer engines of 125 hp and later also more powerful engines. The aircraft fuselage and wing surfaces are covered with fabric. It is similar to the Super Cub PA-18 , but due to the larger mass of the PA-12, it is somewhat slower to control. The Piper PA-14 is the four-seat variant of this aircraft.
Trivia
Two modified versions of type gained fame when in December 1947 Major Clifford Evans and Major George Truman, two officers of the US Air Force , the world successfully orbited in four months, the first attempt with aircraft of this class.
