When the 27-year-old, unsuccessful Indian-British singer-songwriter and former teacher Jack Malik is hit by a bus and at that moment the power goes down for 12 seconds around the world, two things happen. On the one hand he knocks out two teeth, on the other hand the Beatles disappear and with them all their songs from history and people's memories. Only Jack suddenly seems to be the only person who knows the band and their numerous megahits. So far he has played self-composed songs on street corners and in small cafes. Only his friends and his amateur manager Ellie, who is a teacher, came to see him and cheer. Ever since hearing Jack sing of Oasis in a talent competition at Wonderwall School , Ellie believed in his talent and success.
When Jack introduces Yesterday on his acoustic guitar after his accident in private circles , his friends think he wrote the song. With Hey Jude and Let It Be , too , friends and family believe these songs were his. Conversely, Jack feels fooled when everyone asserts that they don't know any Beatles . Only when he could no longer find any tracks or albums of the Beatles on the Internet or in his own record collection did he understand that his friends were telling the truth and that he apparently lived in a new world in which this band and its world successes never existed ; as well as the band Oasis , Zigaretten , Coca-Cola and Harry Potter . However, the Rolling Stones and Pepsi are known in this world . Jack takes advantage of remembering many of the songs and now performs with the inherited songs, which he claims to be his. Jack remembers most of the lyrics of the Beatles' songs quite well, but he has trouble getting the words into the right order with Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane . The famous singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran noticed him and hired him as the opening act, which quickly increased Jack's fame. Ed Sheeran's producer Debra brings Jack to Los Angeles to produce more songs from the Beatles' repertoire. When Jack has to leave his hometown Lowestoft for this purpose , Ellie confesses her love for him, but is also not ready to give up her job as a teacher and come along. Due to the great distance, the contact between the two is reduced, although they miss each other. Jack cannot resist the temptation of a music career, however, because he is now enjoying the kind of success that Ellie has always believed in for him in the past. After a while, Ellie and Gavin, a mutual friend, become a couple; Jack takes this outwardly with composure.
Within a few months, Jack becomes the greatest songwriter and musician of all time, but begins to doubt the correctness of his path and is noticeably afraid of his exposure. Two other people, who can also still remember the Beatles, are grateful to him and encourage him to continue on his way to save the beautiful music of the Beatles in this new world, as they miss it themselves. However, they advise him to be honest wherever possible. On his own, Jack seeks out 78-year-old John Lennon , who actually still lives in this world, but was not a world-famous musician, but went to sea. Jack refrains from confronting him with the Beatles thing, but tries to elicit his wisdom from him. Lennon tells him how important love is in life. Thereupon Jack makes the decision to uncover the hoax, to make all Beatles songs covered by him accessible to all free of charge over the Internet, and finally to confess his love to Ellie; all live and at the same time at the end of an Ed Sheeran concert in a sold out Wembley Stadium . His plan works and he can win Ellie back from Gavin.
Jack starts a family with Ellie and becomes a music teacher.

Directed by Danny Boyle , who won an Oscar for best director in the film Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. Richard Curtis wrote the script . Yesterday , the title of the film, refers to the Beatles song of the same name , which is also one of the band's most successful titles. The main role of Jack Malik was cast with Himesh Patel . Lily James plays his manager Ellie, while Kate McKinnon took on the role of Ed Sheeran's fictional manager Debra.
The film was shot from April to June 2018 in Gorleston-on-Sea in Norfolk and on the beach there, where a concert scene was shot. At the end of May 2018 the film was shot on Penny Lane in Liverpool . Further recordings were made in Los Angeles.
The film music was composed by Daniel Pemberton . A soundtrack, which in addition to Pemberton's work also includes the cover versions of the Beatles' songs, was released by Universal Music / Polydor Records on June 21, 2019 . It was released in US theaters and United Kingdom theaters on June 28, 2019. Previously there was a screening here at the Edinburgh International Film Festival . Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety explains Yesterday contains only the iconic Beatles tracks that you would include in a collection of the "12 best songs of the Beatles!" Notes at the same time but the question of why songs like Lovely Rita , not You Will See Me , Dig a Pony or Martha My Dear didn't make it into the film. Gleiberman attributes this to the way the filmmakers reduce the Beatles to a kind of karaoke kitsch epiphany. The film only moves along the musical and emotional surface of the band's incandescence and is only little interested in discovering the world of the Beatles. If so, he believed Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle would have found a way to show us that the world would be a barren place without the Beatles. In Yesterday, however, a world would look no different without the Beatles, so the film's fantasy of the Beatles coming back has little effect, says Gleiberman.
Gaby Sikorski from Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino writes that Boyle and Curtis had created a declaration of love for the Beatles and their music together, and that some scenes could become unforgettable and thus make the film immortal as well: “How Jack tries in comical desperation to read the text of To remember Eleanor Rigby , or how he wants to play Let it be for his musically clueless, otherwise cute parents with great fervor and is constantly interrupted. Oliver Kube from Filmstarts thinks that Boyle understands how to use a convincing cast to "implement the story so fast that it is a lot of fun for a long time". The feel-good comedy flattens out towards the end and has an “unnecessarily sentimental” ending with an “easy way out of the story”. Bert Rebhandl writes in the FAZ that the style is “genuinely modern today, the generation that grew up with the playful tools of wipe and like appearances”, find a cinematic idiom here. At the same time, Yesterday is "decidedly old-fashioned in the sense in which the Beatles could now also be heard nostalgically".
Frank Schnelle from epd Film says that the director and screenwriter are aiming for “the clash of world hits and unsuccessfulness, familiarity and ignorance, sixties rock and the digital era”. Incidentally, the film takes a look at the mechanisms of the contemporary music industry, but remains "basically always with the question of where stolen fame and undeserved honors should actually lead the hero in the end". One should have focused even more on the music theme and, for example, “could have found out how the absence of the Beatles would have actually affected our pop culture”. In the second half, the focus is more on a love story based on Curtis' romantic comedies. In the end, the film recalled "with wit and esprit of the great achievements of Britishness".

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends Yesterday for the subjects of music, English, German and history and offers materials for the film for the classroom. Philipp Bühler writes there that the central idea of a world without the Beatles puts every school class in music and English lessons before a test: “Who still knows the old songs? [...] The film itself addresses the Internet as a huge archive in which memories are stored, but possibly also deleted at some point. So how is cultural memory constituted? How does the value of books, films or fast-moving pop music fluctuate? "
