Gorleston-on-Sea , Gorleston for short , is next to Great Yarmouth the easternmost town in the county of Norfolk in Great Britain and a seaside resort on the North Sea .

The city is located south and west of Great Yarmouth, separated from the river Yare, which runs in north-south direction, and has been part of the Borough of Great Yarmouth since 1974 . Its history is older than that of the larger neighboring town in the north. In the Domesday Book the city is mentioned as a fiefdom of Count Guert, with salt pans for extracting salt from the sea. There were two country estates in the Middle Ages , Gorleston Manor and Bacons Manor. In 1511 the place was united with the village of Southtown. Administratively, Southtown has belonged to Great Yarmouth since 1681, ecclesiastically still to Gorleston-on-Sea. In the 1832 Act, Gorleston-on-Sea was electorally incorporated into Great Yarmouth County, although it was part of Suffolk until 1891 . In the 19th and 20th centuries it was an important center for herring fishing . Today the inhabitants live mainly from the oil industry in the North Sea and from tourism . In the times of Edward VII it was an elegant, well-frequented seaside resort, the atmosphere of which can still be felt today. It had a total of three stations until May 1970, which were closed in 1942 (North Station) and in 1970 when the line was closed. There is a large library, the previous building of which was donated by Andrew Carnegie in 1904 , and a golf club in the south of the village. The James Paget Hospital is an important health center for the region. Two lighthouses secure shipping.
