Colin McArthur Clark (born October 9, 1932 in London , † December 17, 2002 ) was a British filmmaker and writer .

life and career

Colin Clark was born in 1932 in Marylebone , London, to art historian Kenneth Clark and his first wife, Elizabeth Jane Martin . Here he grew up with his twin sister Colette and his four years older brother Alan Clark , a conservative politician and military historian. He received his education at Eton College and Christ Church in Oxford . From 1951 to 1953 he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force .

In 1956, Colin Clark's first permanent job after leaving the university was as assistant director to Sir Laurence Olivier in his comedy The Prince and the Dancer with Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe in the leading roles. During the shooting, Marilyn Monroe, who was newly married to the playwright Arthur Miller , and Colin Clark had a harmless love affair. Colin Clark later processed this time in two books with the titles The Prince, the Showgirl and Me and My Week With Marilyn . In 2011 they were filmed in the drama My Week with Marilyn , starring Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier and Eddie Redmayne as Colin Clark.

Clark subsequently continued to work for Laurence Oliver in the plays The Entertainer , Titus Andronicus and a few other stage productions. He later worked as an assistant to Denis Forman at Granada Television in Manchester . In 1960 Colin Clark moved to New York, where he helped set up educational television on Channel 13 in New Jersey with the aim of bringing art and culture to the New York area. He was responsible for the documentary series Art: New York and recorded live concerts by Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins .

In 1965, Clark moved back to the UK to produce documentaries and series with Angus Wilson and Bernard Levin for Associated TeleVision . He directed an art documentary series presented by his father, Kenneth Clark. In 1971 Colin Clark left ATV to work as an independent filmmaker. He continued to make documentaries with a cultural background for various commercial clients and also for the Getty Museum . In 1987 Colin Clark retired from documentary films and devoted himself to writing.

Colin Clark was after two divorces - including the marriage to the French ballerina Violette Verdy - married in 1984 in third marriage to Helena Siu Kwan. He died in December 2002 in his hometown of London at the age of 70.
