from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A magic book is a textbook on the art of magic that conveys its technical and psychological aspects and possibly also describes the development and history of the art of magic.

history

The book Hocus Pocus Junior , published in London in 1634, is considered to be the first magic book that was intended to describe magic tricks for self-demonstration . For the first time it brought an illustrated text in English that dealt with the description of magic tricks. The book thus influenced the entire later authorship of other magic books. In the following 60 years alone, no fewer than 13 issues appeared.
However, magic tricks were described in the book The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot , published in 1584, but these were not published as instructions but as explanations.

A German translation by Hocus Pocus Junior appeared in 1667 with the addition: Or the art of hand-held games, clearly and diligently described, also explained with figures.

General

The magic book genre has been firmly established since the 19th century. While magic books were initially published by commercial publishers, with the specialization of magic as an artistic form of representation, a separate specialist book scene increasingly developed, in which authors often publish their books in small editions and only make them accessible to specialist colleagues.

Presentation

The presentation of the copies, which are only intended for a small group, is very different. Often, however, they are just as professionally designed and produced as commercial books.
