Reviews

“Charming, funny, graceful and witty staged film adaptation of a play. Director and leading actor Olivier primarily relies on acting; the cinematic resolution of the event, on the other hand, remains rather conventional and rigid. Marilyn Monroe shows one of her best performances in this enchanting comedy. "

The Prince and the Showgirl is great fun if you don't take it seriously. Its author certainly doesn't. Terence Rattigan just made up a game to keep us entertained for two hours, and the actors really enjoy it. You try to look straightforward, but a wink gives you away. In the case of Laurence Olivier, the wink first has to find its way through a thick monocle to reach the outside world, but it also manages to do so. This performance is full of subtle humor. [...] Marilyn's role does not have such subtle nuances. She is a simple-minded, open-minded showgirl and nothing more, and Miss Monroe plays it with cheerfulness, childlike innocence, happy squeaks, pouting mouth. Eyes as big as golf balls and many a hearty swing of their well-formed curves. "
