Enzo and the wondrous world of people (Original title: The Art of Racing in the Rain ) is an American tragic comedy from 2019 , based on the novel Enzo. The Art of Being Human is based by Garth Stein from 2008. The script was written by Mark Bomback , while Simon Curtis directed the film. The film is about the dog Enzo, who is originally voiced by Kevin Costner . Enzo's master is played by Milo Ventimiglia .

The Golden Retriever Enzo of racing driver Denny Swift is in Seattle dying and recapitulated his life. Enzo believes in an old Mongolian legend according to which a dog will be reborn as a human in the next life if he is ready.

The dog tells how he was accepted as a puppy by Denny Swift, who then pursued his career as a racing driver and met Eve a year later. Denny and Eve get married and have their daughter Zoe, whose birth Denny is not present. Later, however, Eve is diagnosed with a brain tumor, from which she finally dies in the presence of Enzo.

Eve's father Maxwell then demands custody of Zoe, as he blames Denny and his frequent absence due to racing for the death of his daughter. Maxwell, who breaks his rib in an accident after an argument with Denny, sues Denny, whereupon Denny loses custody for the time being and is threatened with jail time.

Denny is offered a job as a test driver for Ferrari prototypes in Maranello , Italy , which he refuses due to his private situation. When he went jogging with the aging Enzo, the dog was hit by a car. At the hospital, it is discovered that Enzo has hip dysplasia .

Denny agrees to an out-of-court settlement and wants to give up custody of Zoe so that Maxwell can drop the lawsuit and he can visit his daughter. However, Enzo tears up the documents and convinces his master that he has to keep fighting. At the upcoming court hearing, Maxwell's wife Trish tells the truth about her husband's accident, whereupon Denny is given full custody of his daughter. He then accepts Ferrari's offer by telephone.

In the weeks that followed, Enzo's health deteriorated rapidly and Denny, realizing that his dog was about to die, took him to the racetrack, where he did another lap. Enzo realizes that he will no longer be able to travel to Italy with me, but believing in a resurrection as a human being, he looks forward to his future life.

Years later, Denny lives with his daughter in Italy and is now a successful Formula 1 driver when he meets a young fan who asks for an autograph. Denny, whom the boy named Enzo reminds of an old friend, gives the fan's father his phone number and offers to train the boy in racing when he is old enough.

In July 2009 Universal Pictures bought the film rights to Garth Stein's novel Enzo. The art of being a person who was originally published a year earlier under the title The Art of Racing in the Rain . They wanted to film the book with Patrick Dempsey in the lead role.

However, since no director was found for the material, the rights were finally taken over by Disney in January 2016 , who wanted to have the film produced by Neal H. Moritz .

Finally, filming began in Vancouver in 2018 . The film had its theatrical release on August 9, 2019 in the USA and Canada. The film was released in German cinemas on October 3, 2019.

reception

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film only received 43% critical approval . Film critic Antje Wessels calls the film a “wonderfully unkitchy family drama” that, despite all its cuteness, touches on serious and sometimes deadly sad topics.

The Disney and Fox film flopped at the box office, taking in the first weekend only 8 million US dollars into the American cinema.
