The hostage situation (original title Bel Canto ) is an American thriller by Paul Weitz , which was released on September 14, 2018 in US cinemas and on February 22, 2019 on DVD and Blu-ray.

The famous American opera soprano Roxanne Coss travels to South America to receive a high-ranking politician in a dictatorship ruled by the military. She is supposed to give a private concert at the birthday party of the wealthy Japanese industrialist Katsumi Hosokawa, but suddenly a group of guerrillas, led by General Benjamin, gain access to the building and take society hostage, such as the successful Hosokawa and the translator Gen. The terrorists want to release their imprisoned comrades. Actually, they were after the president of the country, but he is not present. After a brief negotiation, they release all women except Coss, but they retain the men and Coss, whom they recognize as valuable bargaining chips. For them a martyrdom begins that is to last for a month.

The film is based on a novel by Ann Patchett . As early as 2013 it became known that Paul Weitz would take over the direction.

In September 2016 it was announced that Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe would take on leading roles and that Demian Bichir would also be on the cast list. In the run-up to the 2017 Berlinale , it became known that Sebastian Koch , Christopher Lambert and Elsa Zylberstein had also received roles in the film.

The score was composed by David Majzlin. The soundtrack to the film, which includes 23 pieces of music, was released as download by Decca Gold on September 14, 2018 and contains songs by Renée Fleming .
