Being Flynn is an American film drama by Paul Weitz from the year 2012 with Robert De Niro , Paul Dano and Julianne Moore in the lead roles . The film is based on the autobiographical novel Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn .

action

Nick Flynn is burdened by surprisingly seeing his father Jonathan Flynn again after his long absence, as he has just found a new girlfriend in Denise and is still mourning his mother, Jody Flynn. Jonathan was a taxi driver and dreamed of success as a poet. Jonathan is currently losing his happiness in life, he slips into unemployment and homelessness and asks Nick for help for the first time. A short time later he appears in the homeless shelter where Nick and Denise work.

The stress with his father, his aggressive and high-handed manner, leads Nick to start drinking and using drugs. Then his girlfriend and work colleague Denise separated from him. As a consequence of his behavior, Jonathan is expelled from the homeless asylum and struggles on the street. Nick plagues his conscience that his father is not doing well, lets him search the streets of New York and takes him in for a short time in his apartment.

In flashbacks one learns that as a young father of a family, Jonathan was in jail for check fraud and that Nick grew up without a full-fledged father figure among the many changing lovers of his mother. One day Nick's mother took her own life, which Nick attributed to the reading of his attempts at writing by his mother. In an interview with Jonathan, he confirms that, in his opinion, words never have the power to drive people to suicide and so frees Nick from his allegations.

Nick then quits the homeless asylum and takes up a literature study, Jonathan comes back to an apartment through fortunate circumstances. At the end of the film, Nick introduces Jonathan, who often expressed himself racist and homophobic, to his wife of color and their daughter.
