action

Martha manages to escape from a dubious community in the Catskill Mountains with a sect-like character and their leader Patrick, who ruled with an iron fist. In the holiday home of her sister Lucy and her husband Ted, she finds refuge, slowly tries to find her way back to normal life and to get closer to her family. But it quickly becomes clear that life in the commune had far worse emotional consequences than initially thought. The constant fear of being found by the community members and the permanent memories of the terrible time make the woman seem to lose her sense of reality. In the memoirs, it is shown how Martha was raped by Patrick within the sect. A fate she shares with female newcomers. It also shows how the sect financed itself with break-ins. In one of these break-ins, the home owner was murdered by a female cult member. Patrick, who ruled the sect with charm on the one hand, and violence and intimidation on the other, tried to gloss over the murder with esoteric drivel. Martha later sees people several times for whom it is not clear whether they really exist. The film ends with a trip to a psychiatric facility where she is to be treated.

Production background

The plot has numerous parallels to the real case of the Manson Family , who committed several murders in California in 1969. Like Patrick in the film, Charles Manson lived in a remote, rural area with a group of (mostly female) youths who were devoted to worship. Manson renamed the members of his sect - as Patrick calls Martha "Marcy May" in the movie. Like Patrick, Manson sang to the guitar. Manson also made sexual intercourse with him a condition of the women's membership and later encouraged them to have multiple sexual partners within the group. In addition, Patrick shows the same manipulative, sociopathic traits as Manson. Susan Atkins , a member of the real sect, had behavioral disorders from her mother's early death that made her vulnerable to the cult. The same thing is suggested for Martha in the film. Manson, like Patrick, instigated his members to break into, steal, and eventually kill some of the wealthy. One of the Manson victims was the heavily pregnant actress Sharon Tate , who was stabbed 16 times in her home by four members of the sect on August 9, 1969.

Director Sean Durkin at the screening of the film in Toronto

“Peter Travers is astonished by Elizabeth Olsen's performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene, a new drama about a young woman who escapes a nightmarish cult. Olsen, the younger sister of Mary Kate and Ashley, is utterly captivating in this film - it's almost impossible to take your eyes off her when she's on screen. "

“In addition to the oppressive mood of“ Martha Marcy May Marlene ”, Sean Durkin's directorial debut is particularly impressive because of the cast's performance. First and foremost, the newcomer Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, shines with the gentle play in the rollercoaster of emotions. "

“She bathes naked, she moans during sex, she is scared. But of what? The paranoia thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene" tells about a young woman with a sect past. One of the most highly regarded talents in Hollywood shines in the lead role - the sister of the Olsen twins. "
