history
The Sana Group was founded in 1972 by the “Association for the Planning and Promotion of Private Hospitals e. V. ”founded in Cologne by 18 private health insurance companies. A little later, at the request of the registry court, the company name was supplemented with the addition “Sana” (Latin sanare “to heal, make healthy”).
Since then, the number of owners in this area has risen to 30 German health insurance companies. Together with Siemens and other companies, the Sana Group has a stake in Pro Consilio AG, which was founded by the Hamburg-Ost medical network.
At first, the company only acquired general hospitals from non-municipal sponsorship. From 1984, the Hürth municipal general hospital was the first to take over a municipal hospital.
Sana continued to grow in the 1980s, buying smaller private clinics that had run into economic distress. For the first time, specialist clinics such as today's Sana Klinik München-Solln GmbH were taken over and the services expanded to include rehabilitation .
The group continued to grow in the 1990s through management contracts with financially troubled clinics from public or non-profit organizations. At this time, cooperation with municipalities and districts in the management of old people's and nursing homes was also started. Sana is now the carrier for 17 homes with around 1600 home places.
As of November 1, 2000, a German university hospital in Rostock was managed for the first time on the basis of a management contract.
In 2005, Sana Kliniken took over the majority of the Paritätischer Unternehmensverbund in Berlin , making the largest acquisition in the company's history. The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) and the Sana Kliniken are aiming for a new business area with the joint operation of laboratory and practice communities.
In 2006 there were further takeovers in the area of 2,200 hospitals, around 1,800 of which were smaller in rural areas. From 2004 to 2007, Sana took over 16 public hospitals and integrated them into the group. In 2007 the Städtische Kliniken Düsseldorf and their homes for the elderly were taken over and initially a 49 percent stake in Klinikum Duisburg (formerly Städtische Kliniken Kalkweg), which was increased to 99 percent in 2015. The owners converted the company into a stock corporation in November 2007 and increased the equity to 120 million euros. An IPO is not planned.
CEO Philippi announced in February 2009 that the group intends to double its sales from 2009 to 2012 from one to two billion euros and also to acquire minority shares in state hospitals in the future.
In February 2009, Sana Kliniken AG signed a nationwide group collective agreement for all employment groups for the first time with the United Services Union (ver.di). The group collective agreement has been in effect since January 2009 for 6,000 of the around 16,400 employees and is to be gradually transferred to all 38 Sana clinics.
In 2009 the Sana Group bought 74.9 percent of the clinic shares in Regio Kliniken GmbH in the Pinneberg district . After years of losses, the Regio Kliniken made a profit for the first time in 2017.
In 2010, Sana Kliniken AG took over the Rummelsberg hospital in Schwarzenbruck near Nuremberg.

The transaction includes the clinics in Biberach, Riedlingen and Laupheim with 643 beds, 1,725 employees and an annual turnover of 80 million euros. In addition, the Offenbach am Main Clinic in Hesse was acquired in summer 2013 .
